Te Ao Māori

Kaupapa Māori research with the view to embedding mātauranga into biosecurity outcomes that ensure tiakitanga of the whenua, taiao, ngahere and Aotearoa kātoa.

Theme Scope:

  • Whakamohio – improved understanding of what plant biosecurity challenges are for Māori and how they can prepare and respond to new and invasive threats to the taiao
  • Whakamana – By Māori, for Māori – Maori led research programmes with outcomes that benefit the taiao and whenua.
  • Whakahono – integrated programmes of work  utilising both western and mātauranga knowledge
  • Tiakitanga – to enhance the role of mana whenua and tangata whenua as kaitiaki
  • Underpinning all research will be mātauranga that identifies and utilizes traditional and or contemporary knowledge  stand alone or as an adaptive or integrated solution.

 

Current Projects

Improving Māori/Indigenous engagement within B3 programs

Lead By Waipaina Awarau-Morris. Duration: Project 4X24.02 runs from 2024 – 2028 (4 years).

Enhancing Biosecurity Through Indigenous Collaborations

Lead By Teresa Waiariki. Duration: Project M25.06 runs from 2025 - 2027

Kaitiakitanga and mātauranga Māori as a response to biosecurity threats to taonga plant species, native ecosystems and communities.
